Project Description
This Model Toy was designed and created using digital fabrication/tools. Almost every component of this toy was modeled in Rhinoceros 3D. Heavily inspired by a jack-in-the-box, you turn the handle on this Model Toy and the box opens, revealing a colorful giraffe.
3D Modeling
Before any fabrication, the concept and design for the Model Toy was modeled in Rhinoceros 3D. The vision was to incorporate a few simple mechanical components that could be positioned on one wall and would easily open the box each time.
The components include a wheel with an attached wedge and hole in the center, two different sized hooks, and a knob for the handle. All of the components are scaled accordingly and ready to be 3D printed.
Constructing
Below are pictures of the modeled and 3D printed components added to the box. When the box is closed, the grey hook holds down the lid with the yellow hook, they match up together. The handle spins the wheel and the wedge attached to the wheel tilts the grey hook back which causes the yellow hook to be released and the force of the spring opens the box. The rubber bands were added to keep the grey hook in the same place after it is titled. The pictures also show the spring. The spring needed to be nailed down and a  rectangle shaped piece of metal keeps it in the middle of the box. The giraffe is attached to the spring.
